IOW Surf Club – Frost Bite Series Event No 2

The Isle of Wight – Frost Bite Series

October – Event No 1

With two events into the IOW Surf Club Frost Bite Series sponsored by Rapa Nui Clothing , Matt Harwood leads the Open division with an in-form Doug Richards hot on his heels.

The October event took place in stormy two to three foot conditions at Compton. With a competitive field of surfers competition was heated to get to the final. After two superb semi-finals, four surfers made the final consisting of Doug Richards, Alan Reed, Joe Truman and Matt Harwood.

The final was a closely fought battle. After dominating earlier heats Doug failed to produce earlier form. Alan found a superb right but could not find a back-up score. Whilst Joe showed consistency catching several stylish rides. However it was an in-form Matt Harwood who started with a spectacular opening wave consisting of three big turns and then backed up his score with a good second wave and just pipped Joe to take first place.

November – Event No 2

However, in the November event held last weekend (Sat 13th) Doug Richards showed his true talent by overcoming a competitive field of talent to take the win in very testing, weak two foot surf at Compton.

Against tough competition Doug surfed well through all rounds to book a berth in the final along side the ever-stylish Joe Truman, competitive Matt Harwood and Chris Mannion who has just returned from training in Australia.

Matt Harwood and Joe Truman opted for a strategy of catching inside waves and trying to build scores from medium size waves, but it was the patience of Chris and Doug who waited for bigger set waves out back who caught bigger waves that allowed room for faster moves and bigger turns. Finally, Doug edged out Chris to take the win with Matt coming third and Joe fourth.

The weekend was topped off by Alan Reed stylishly dominating and winning the first Longboard event and in the Junior Division Robin Forrest just edging out Henry Holmes(2nd) and Dylan Hamlet (3rd) to win. All three surfers showing great progression and skill.

IOW Surf Club Frost Bite Series

IOW Surf Club Frost Bite Series – by Oliver Harvey & The Isle of Wight Surf Club

The first ‘Frost bite’ competition of six being held this winter, sponsored kindly by the boys at Rapanui was a great success.

Greeted with pretty grim onshore head-high waves at Compton, first up we saw the groms test the water. Both Robin & Dylan snagged plenty of waves each but Robin gradually took control with a couple of good waves to take the first event. The waves continue to prove challenging for the mens Open, as the pool of 16 riders entered the water in 4 man, 20 min heats.
Julie Tortajada, in the first quarter final, took the Ladies title getting several fun waves. From the first round the following progressed into the semis:

Heat 1:

1.Richard Gray

2. Jamie Whittle

Heat 2:

1. Nick Whittle

2. Foz Heat

Heat 3:

1. Jo Truman

2. Al Reed Heat

Heat 4:

1. Doug Richards

2. Matt Harwood

Semi One saw Douglas Richards start to show his quality, making some nice aggressive turns , and following him after a somewhat slow start, Jo’s local knowledge paid dividends, hooking into some good little rights, his smooth style saw him up his wave count and into second place only 0.5 points behind Dougie & just ahead of Rich who surfed well in both his heats.

In Semi Two, Matt, keen to progress, started with a bang – getting several scores on the board in quick succession. Al also posted some scores whilst Jamie & Nick, who both showed good form earlier on, were quiet until the last quarter, when Nick started to make a come-back, but too little, too late saw Al & Matt progress into the final

The Final was closely fought battle , the waves failed to improve, which saw the judges favourite going into the final, Doug, making a subdued start. We did see glimmers of his solid style, but the waves just didn’t go his way. Matt, with a great high scoring first wave, continued to post some respectable scores, streaking ahead on wave count alone, Al found a solid right all the way into the inside, showing some style with cross-steps & smooth cutbacks. Jo’s consistency and nack for finding those fun inside walls, meant he edged ahead of Al into second and Matt taking the top spot with skill & tenacity.

Final Scores:

1.Matt Harwood 11.83

2. Jo Truman 11.53

3. Al Reed 10.16

4. Doug Richards 9.63

IOW Surf Movie – by Andrew Haworth

IOW Surf Movie - by Andrew Haworth

A great big thanks to Andy for coming down to the Island for the Surf Movie Night weekend and for being there with his camera when we got those great waves on Saturday 9th October 2010 at Compton.

Andy has a great Longboarding movie ‘Devon Lanes and Longboards’ (shown on the movie night) for sale.

The film was born out of the love of surfing and an appreciation of North Devon, its waves, its people and its places. Devon Lanes and Longboards features many of the UK’s top Longboarders surfing at various beaches around the North Devon area. Starring local surfers including Ben Haworth, Ashley Braunton, Phil Hill and many more. It also features other top Longboarders such as Ben Skinner, Elliot Dudley, James Parry and Adam Griffiths.

The motivation to complete and publish the film was stimulated by the awful news Andy’s sister was diagnosed with secondary cancers in April 2009. Andy wanted to show her his love and support by making and dedicating this film to her fight against cancer and to donate all the profits from the film to a charity of her choosing.
